A5052 aluminum for stamping and sheet metal

A5052 is the JIS designation for 5052 aluminum-magnesium alloy (EN AW-5052). It is not heat treatable, gets its strength from cold work, resists corrosion well and bends cleanly in the H32 temper. We stamp A5052 from 0.2–0.3 mm coil and fabricate thicker sheet into light covers, plates and housings.

What is A5052 aluminum?

A5052 is an aluminum alloy with about 2.5% magnesium and a small chromium addition. Magnesium strengthens it in solid solution, so it is stronger than pure aluminum (A1050, A1100) and the 3000 series, without heat treatment. It has good resistance to atmospheric and marine corrosion and is one of the most common aluminum sheet grades for fabricated enclosures and stamped parts.

Design rules for A5052 parts

  • Use H32 for parts with bends; inside radius of at least about 1 × t is a safe starting point.
  • H34 and harder tempers need larger radii and can crack on bends parallel to the rolling direction.
  • A5052 has about one third the stiffness of steel; a panel that is stiff in SPCC may need extra flanges or ribs in aluminum.
  • Aluminum galls on tooling, so we set die clearances and lubrication to suit; mark cosmetic faces on the drawing.
  • For threads in thin A5052, use extruded holes or clinch fasteners rather than plain tapped holes.

Finishing: anodizing, chromate and paint

A5052 anodizes well for clear and colored finishes, although the color can look slightly less uniform than on 6000-series alloys. It also takes chromate-free conversion coatings for conductivity and paint adhesion, and powder coating. All finishing is done by qualified finishing partners and specified on the drawing.

How to call out A5052 on a drawing

  • Grade, temper and standard: for example “A5052-H32 (JIS H 4000)” or “EN AW-5052 H32”
  • Thickness and tolerance
  • Finish: anodize type, color and thickness, conversion coating or powder coat
  • Which faces are cosmetic and whether brushing or protective film is needed
  • Areas that must stay conductive (masked from anodizing) for grounding

Frequently asked questions

Is A5052 the same as 5052?

Yes. A5052 is the JIS designation for the 5052 alloy, which is EN AW-5052 in Europe. Temper codes such as H32 are the same.

Can A5052 be welded?

It is weldable by TIG and MIG. Our laser welding work is stainless and steel; aluminum welding is confirmed per project.

Why choose A5052 over steel?

For weight, corrosion resistance without coating, or heat spreading. It costs more per kilogram and is less stiff, so panels may need more flanges.

Does A5052 corrode outdoors?

It has good resistance to atmospheric and marine corrosion for an aluminum alloy, which is why it is common for outdoor covers. Anodizing or powder coating adds protection and appearance.

What A5052 thickness do you stamp?

We currently run 0.2–0.3 mm A5052 coil; our stamping range is 0.15–1.2 mm. Thicker aluminum is laser cut and bent.
