SPCC cold-rolled steel for stamping and sheet metal

SPCC is commercial-quality cold-rolled carbon steel sheet and strip to JIS G 3141, equivalent to ASTM A1008 CS and EN DC01. It is low cost, flat, and easy to cut, bend and weld, but rusts unless plated, painted or powder coated. We stamp SPCC from 1.0 mm coil and fabricate SPCC sheet into brackets and enclosures.

What is SPCC steel?

SPCC stands for Steel Plate Cold Commercial. It is low-carbon steel that has been cold rolled to a smooth, accurate thickness and annealed. It is the default steel for brackets, chassis, internal panels and painted enclosures in electronics and equipment, because it is inexpensive and behaves predictably on presses and press brakes.

For deeper forming the same standard offers SPCD (drawing quality) and SPCE (deep drawing quality). SPCC handles shallow draws and embossing; for deep-drawn cups and housings, SPCD or SPCE (EN DC03/DC04) gives more margin against splitting.

Typical properties

Widely published typical values, for design estimates only. Elongation limits apply only when ordered; your mill certificate governs.
PropertyTypical value
Tensile strength (JIS G 3141, standard temper)≥ 270 N/mm²
Carbon content≤ 0.15%
Densityabout 7.85 g/cm³
Elastic modulusabout 205 GPa
MagneticYes (ferromagnetic)

What do suffixes like SPCC-SD and SPCC-1/2 mean?

So SPCC-SD is standard temper, dull finish — the most common order code.

SStandard temper (temper rolled) — the default
8, 4, 2, 11/8 hard, 1/4 hard, 1/2 hard, full hard

How should SPCC parts be protected from rust?

All plating, painting and powder coating are done by qualified finishing partners.

Design rules for SPCC parts

  • Inside bend radius of about 0.5–1 × t works well in standard temper.
  • Holes at least about 1 × t in diameter and at least 2 × t plus bend radius from bend lines.
  • Allow for coating thickness on mating features; powder coat adds noticeably more than plating.
  • Plating is applied after forming, so tapped holes may need re-tapping or masking; mark threads that must stay gauge-clean.
  • If corrosion resistance matters and parts are visible, compare the cost of SPCC plus coating with SGCC or SUS304.

SPCC, SECC or SGCC?

SPCC is cheapest as raw material but needs a finish. SECC (electro-galvanized) has a thin, smooth zinc layer and is common for computer chassis. SGCC (hot-dip galvanized) has a thicker zinc layer and is common for cabinets and outdoor parts. Choose by environment, appearance and whether the part is painted afterwards.

How to call out SPCC on a drawing

  • Grade, temper, finish and standard: for example “SPCC-SD (JIS G 3141)” or “DC01 (EN 10130)”
  • Thickness and tolerance
  • Finish: plating type and thickness, or powder coat color (RAL), texture and thickness
  • Threads or contact areas that must be masked from coating
  • Any forming requirement that calls for SPCD or SPCE instead

Frequently asked questions

Is SPCC the same as DC01?

They are close equivalents for commercial-quality cold-rolled steel. Chemistry and mechanical limits differ slightly, so state the property your part relies on.

Is SPCC stainless?

No. SPCC is plain carbon steel and rusts if left uncoated.

Can SPCC be welded?

Yes. It welds easily, including by laser welding, and is usually welded bare and coated afterwards.

Should I choose SPCC or SECC for a chassis?

SECC costs a little more as raw material but arrives zinc-coated, so it often needs no plating. SPCC is better when the part will be powder coated or painted anyway.

What SPCC thickness do you stamp?

We currently run 1.0 mm SPCC coil; our stamping range is 0.15–1.2 mm. Sheet up to 20 mm thick is laser cut in our fabrication workshop.
